Cannes Fireworks Festival 2027: A Spectacular Summer of Light on the French Riviera

Every summer, the skies above the Bay of Cannes become a spectacular stage for one of the most impressive fireworks competitions in Europe. As darkness falls over the Mediterranean, thousands of colourful lights illuminate the sea, the Croisette and the beautiful coastline, creating unforgettable evenings on the French Riviera. The Cannes International Pyrotechnic Art Festival (Festival International d’Art Pyrotechnique de Cannes) is much more than an ordinary fireworks display. It is an international competition bringing together some of the world's finest pyrotechnic artists, who transform the night sky into extraordinary choreographies of light, colour and music. And 2027 will be particularly special: Cannes celebrates the 60th anniversary of this prestigious festival, which has been enchanting residents and visitors since 1967.If you are spending your summer holidays on the French Riviera, this is an event well worth adding to your calendar!

The 60th Anniversary of the Cannes Fireworks Festival

First established in 1967, the Festival International d’Art Pyrotechnique has grown into one of the most prestigious international fireworks competitions in the world. Each summer, renowned pyrotechnic companies from different countries are invited to present their artistic creations over the Bay of Cannes. Their performances combine sophisticated fireworks technology, carefully choreographed sequences, music and extraordinary visual effects. Unlike traditional fireworks displays, these shows are conceived as complete artistic performances. Every explosion, colour, rhythm and sequence is carefully synchronised with the soundtrack, creating a spectacular audiovisual experience. The setting makes it even more extraordinary. The fireworks are launched over the Mediterranean, with the illuminated coastline and the famous Croisette providing a magnificent backdrop. For its 60th anniversary in 2027, Cannes will once again celebrate the art of pyrotechnics and the international creativity that has made this event such an important part of the French Riviera's summer calendar.

Festival Dates and Programme 2027

The 2027 edition will take place during the summer, traditionally spanning July and August. The official dates and participating companies for the 2027 fireworks competition have not yet been published. The programme is expected to be announced by the organisers ahead of the summer season. In previous years, the festival has featured six spectacular evenings, generally including performances around Bastille Day on 14 July and the Assumption holiday on 15 August, alongside additional dates in July and August.Displays have traditionally started at approximately 10 PM, although the timing can vary depending on the occasion. Each participating company presents its own original production, making every evening different. If you have the opportunity, watching more than one display is a wonderful way to appreciate the creativity and diversity of the competing teams. For confirmed dates, participating countries and performance times, consult the official programme: Festival International d'Art Pyrotechnique – Official Website

An International Competition: More Than Just Fireworks

What makes the Cannes festival particularly fascinating is its competitive dimension.International pyrotechnic companies are invited to demonstrate their artistic imagination, technical expertise and ability to create an unforgettable spectacle. The performances are assessed by a professional jury, which considers several aspects of each production, including:

  • Artistic creativity: The originality of the concept and the visual composition.
  • Musical synchronisation: How precisely the fireworks follow and complement the soundtrack.
  • Technical excellence: The complexity, precision and quality of the pyrotechnic effects.
  • Overall impact: The emotional experience and impression left on the audience.

One of the most prestigious distinctions is the Vestale, awarded to the winning pyrotechnic company. Other distinctions include the Jury Prize and the Public Prize. And here is a particularly nice detail: spectators are not simply there to watch. The public can also participate in the competition by voting for their favourite display after each performance. The average of the audience votes determines the Public Prize. So, if you have a favourite, you can actually help it win!

Where to Watch the Cannes Fireworks: The Best Viewing Spots

The fireworks are launched over the Bay of Cannes, making several locations around the waterfront and surrounding hills excellent viewing points. Here are some of the best places to enjoy the spectacle.

1. La Croisette – The Classic Cannes Experience

The famous Boulevard de la Croisette is undoubtedly one of the most popular places to watch the fireworks. Stretching along the Mediterranean, this elegant promenade offers beautiful views across the bay. The public beaches provide particularly good vantage points, allowing you to settle down on the sand and enjoy the entire performance. The atmosphere is wonderful on fireworks evenings, with families, couples and visitors gathering along the waterfront well before the show begins. If you want to experience the festival right in the heart of Cannes, this is the place to be.

Our tip: Arrive early, particularly on 14 July and 15 August, when the crowds are usually larger. Bring a beach towel and enjoy a relaxed evening by the sea while waiting for the show to begin.

2. Le Suquet – Fireworks with a Panoramic View

For a different perspective, head up to Le Suquet, the historic old quarter of Cannes .Its charming narrow streets, traditional Provençal architecture and elevated position offer beautiful panoramic views across the Bay of Cannes. Watching the fireworks from above, with the illuminated town below and the Mediterranean stretching into the distance, is a particularly lovely experience. It is also a wonderful opportunity to combine the fireworks with an evening stroll through one of Cannes' most picturesque neighbourhoods.

3. Port Canto – A Maritime Atmosphere

Located at the eastern end of the Croisette, Port Canto offers another attractive viewing location. Surrounded by yachts and sailboats, the marina provides a lovely setting for enjoying the fireworks over the bay. It can be an interesting alternative to the busier central Croisette, although the atmosphere and available viewing areas will depend on the arrangements for each festival evening.

4. California Hill – A View from Above

For those who prefer a more elevated viewpoint, California Hill overlooks Cannes and the surrounding coastline .Its position offers a panoramic perspective of the city and the bay, with the fireworks illuminating the horizon. It is a particularly appealing option for photographers looking to capture the spectacle together with the wider landscape of Cannes.

5. From the Sea – A Truly Special Experience

For something a little different, why not watch the fireworks from a boat?Several local operators offer evening boat excursions during the summer season. Being out on the water, surrounded by the Mediterranean, while the fireworks explode above the bay is undoubtedly a memorable experience. Some excursions include drinks or dinner, making it a lovely option for couples or a special evening with friends. However, availability, departure points and access restrictions on fireworks evenings should always be checked in advance.

What Time Do the Fireworks Start?

In previous editions, most performances have started at approximately 10 PM, once darkness has fallen. The traditional Bastille Day celebration on 14 July can have a different starting time, so it is important to check the official programme. Each performance generally lasts around 20–25 minutes, although the exact duration may vary. For the best experience, arrive at your chosen viewing location at least an hour before the scheduled start, particularly on the busiest evenings.

Is the Cannes Fireworks Festival Free?

Yes! One of the best things about the Cannes International Pyrotechnic Art Festival is that the public fireworks displays are free to enjoy. You do not need a ticket to watch from the public beaches or the promenade. Of course, there are also more exclusive ways to experience the evening. Some private beach clubs, restaurants, rooftop venues and boat operators offer special packages, often including dinner, drinks or reserved viewing areas. These options can be particularly attractive for a special occasion, but they are certainly not necessary to enjoy the spectacle.

Practical Tips for Enjoying the Festival

A little preparation can make your evening considerably more enjoyable.

Arrive early. The most popular viewing areas become busy well before the fireworks begin. Give yourself plenty of time to find a comfortable spot.

Consider public transport. Cannes attracts large crowds on fireworks evenings, and traffic can become particularly congested. The train station is conveniently located, approximately five minutes on foot from the Palais des Festivals.

Plan your return journey. Trains can be very busy after the performances, and access to platforms may be regulated. Check the timetable in advance and purchase your return ticket online if travelling by train.

Be careful with parking. The Palais des Festivals car park closes on fireworks evenings from 8 PM until midnight. Choose an alternative car park and check local traffic arrangements before setting off.

Bring something comfortable. A beach towel, a light jacket, some water and perhaps a little picnic are useful additions, especially if you plan to watch from the beach.

Check the weather. Strong winds, rough seas or severe weather conditions can affect the programme. Postponements are announced through the official festival channels.

Remember your camera. The combination of fireworks, sea and illuminated coastline makes for some wonderful photographs.

The Cannes Sky Show Summit 2027: A New Event

The 60th anniversary year will also introduce an interesting new event to Cannes. The Cannes Sky Show Summit (C3S) will take place on 23 and 24 August 2027, alongside the wider Festival International d'Art Pyrotechnique. This is a new international professional gathering dedicated to the future of spectacular aerial entertainment. It will bring together pyrotechnic companies, drone specialists, technology manufacturers and other professionals involved in creating large-scale visual shows. The programme will explore innovations in fireworks, drones, lasers, special effects, immersive technologies, safety and environmental responsibility. Although the summit is primarily aimed at industry professionals rather than holidaymakers, it is another indication of how Cannes continues to develop its reputation as an international centre for spectacular events.

Make a Summer Evening of It in Cannes

A fireworks evening is also a wonderful excuse to discover more of Cannes. Arrive in the late afternoon and explore the old town of Le Suquet, with its picturesque streets, little boutiques and traditional restaurants. Walk down towards the Old Port, enjoy an aperitif overlooking the yachts and then continue along the Croisette. You can have dinner at one of the many restaurants along the waterfront or simply find a nice spot on the beach and enjoy the festive atmosphere before the show. As night falls, the bay becomes a natural amphitheatre, and the fireworks transform the Mediterranean sky into a breathtaking display of light and colour. It is one of those quintessential French Riviera summer experiences that should not be missed.
